Introducing Foundation Lane's Office Space

This space has been quite the transformation and came with it fair share of design challenges. When the owner, Janine over at Foundation Lane called me, she said I was able to get an office space for my staff members steps away from the center, but I need your help! The space is dark and gloomy and there is this not so inviting blue carpeting in there that I am not sure what to do. This space has a lot of character as it is part of an old historic building in Medfield, Massachusetts. The beams in this space are absolutely gorgeous and showcases its original architectural elements. The walls in this space were already painted a light blue color so we created a design based on the design features we were unable to change. And let me tell you, this space looks nothing like it did.
Lets take a closer look at the different areas within the space that help create a cohesive design plan and provides functionality for staff members to work on their admin work, collaborate, and reset.

The space is roughly around 300 sq ft. We needed to create different areas within the office area to allow for functionally. As you enter the office space, you are greeted by this gorgeous console table from Target. The console area provides a surface area to drop your belongings such as wallets and keys. It is an easy grab and go spot when departing from the office space.  This leads us into the cozy and relaxing seating area - the perfect space for collaboration.
In any workspace, I firmly believe in establishing different zones to boost productivity. The seating area provides an opportunity for team members to collaborate in a more comfortable setting. It can be informal than the traditional standard table and chairs and allows for the perfect team space to problem solve and work together. However given that it is an open space, it is important to have a quiet zone within the space for more heads down work which leads up to the side desk area.

This side desk provides an opportunity for a team member to work independently and focus on their work. We set it aside in the room to allow for that. The desk is from the Studio McGee line from Target and is absolutely gorgeous! The natural wood tone gives the room another textural element and really ties everything together.

Now for the main focal area in the office - the main desk (well, actually dining table).  The dining table/desk allows for extra space to spread out paperwork, work on a project, and organize all those piles. It is the perfect meeting space for those zoom calls meeting and for when they can, allow for the perfect space to meet with new families and current ones. These stunning chairs from World Market were the perfect addition - providing a stunning visual with the handwoven rope.

And then like any other office space, we needed to add in a lot of storage. We had this perfect inlet area to add these glass door Billy bookcases from Ikea. We knew we wanted to provide a balance within the space to allow an area to display some beautiful decor pieces, but hide all the administrative items such as colored paper, crafts, laminator, and extra materials, etc. These bookcases provided just that! In the back of the office, there is an AC unit that is in the wall - typical for New England. It was a bit of an eyesore when you walked into the space. We added in this OXBERG bookcase from Ikea that allowed for more storage for the teachers but created a divide between the printer room and open concept. Hello, woven divider! See below for the transformation!

Although this space came with it's challenges, we were able to create an open and inviting space that is bright and airy. By adding in some lighter colored furniture, different wood tones and textures, this stunning area rug from Rugs USA, and some pop of colors, it will created a serene working atmosphere that almost feels like home. When styling a console table, you want to find the right balance between decorative objects, colors, and textures. Below I created a simple guide on how to style a console table. However this can be easily applied when decorating shelves, coffee tables, and fireplace mantles.

Wall Color: Sherwin Williams Alabaster White (satin)
Our first project of 2021 is complete and I am so happy with how it turned out. We focused on turning a dull white wall into a statement wall! By adding board and batten, it gave the space dimension and texture that I was looking for.  To create the board and batten, we used 1x3 boards and framed the area with 1x4 boards. The wall is painted in Sherwin Williams Alabaster White in satin. It is one of my favorites.
Earlier in 2020, I painted the walls Sherwin Williams Storm Cloud from a dull yellow color that the previous owners had painted it. Before the cabinets from Ikea,  I used to have Target cubbies to store all the kids toys. However, after some time, I wanted a storage solution that hid all the toys. The Brimnes IKEA cabinets were the best solution! To create a more built-in look, we went ahead and added a wood top to them with a 1x20 panel board. However measurements may be different for you depending on how flush your cabinets are on the wall. We secured the wood down with screws and decided to keep it a natural wood tone. Given that this is a playroom, I did add a matte polyurethane coat to protect the wood
.
To complete the space, I added in some shelves to display some coastal elements and really tie it all together. We used 1x10 pine boards from a local lumber yard and purchased brackets from Amazon. Typically, these brackets are black but I sprayed painted the brackets white so they would blend in with the wall. I love how the white brackets are paired with the natural tones of the wood. To ensure that the shelves are flush against the walls, we made sure to cut sections out of the shelves to fit properly. It was pretty simple measuring it out and it really made a huge difference.

When I am decorating a space, I like to use decor items that are transitional from room to room. In the playroom, I used non-traditional playroom items knowing that if I plan to switch out the space, I can use the pieces elsewhere. Can you envision this space as an office? I can!

As the boys get older, we want to ensure this space can grow with them. I purchased this white table from Pottery Barn Kids. The table is perfect for my littles now, but as they get older, the table grows with them. We got the additional legs for the table so it can later be turned into a regular craft table.

In the playroom, it was also important for us to include a little reading nook for the boys to hang out. This sweet little area is perfect for this. I added the wicker storage  basket with removable lid from Target which works as a perfect little bench for the boys to look out the window - bird watching and able to hide all the toys! It adds so much texture to the space too.

When choosing the color palette for this space, I wanted to keep it neutral creating a room that was relaxing, yet calming. By mixing in colors of white, beige, gray, and natural elements, it provided such a serene atmosphere that we were looking for.  Overall, I am so happy with how the space turned out and look forward to seeing the space evolve as the boys get older. Later, I will touch base on how I organize the cabinets with all of their toys.
